EMDR: Your Questions Answered

What is EMDR?

Check out this blog to know what EMDR stands for and how it works!

How is EMDR different from regular talk therapy?

EMDR involves a highly specific protocol. You will be asked questions about what you are thinking, feeling, and experiencing in your body while engaging in rapid eye movements. There is a structure to the sessions that is slightly different from regular talk therapy. With that being said, at Woven Together Trauma Therapy, we approach EMDR from a relational and flexible perspective to fit your needs. Check out this blog to learn more about our tailored approach.

How do I know if EMDR is right for me?

EMDR is great for those who are looking to process traumatic memories or events that might be impacting their day-to-day functioning. For example, let’s say you got into a car accident and are now having trouble driving without severe anxiety. EMDR would allow for you to process the car accident in a way that decreases the trauma response in your body so you can get back to driving again with less anxiety. EMDR is known to be helpful for PTSD, anxiety/phobias, sexual assault, grief, loss, abuse, betrayal and anything else that you feel has not been resolved with regular talk therapy.

How much does EMDR cost?

EMDR weekly sessions are $300 per 45-minute session. We also have EMDR intensives that have a higher upfront cost but are usually cheaper than weekly therapy in the long run.

How many sessions will it take?

The length of EMDR treatment varies based on what it is that you would like to process. We offer free 15-minute consultations where you can share what is going on for you and the therapist can give you a slightly better picture of how long treatment might take.

What do I do during an EMDR session?

During an EMDR session, you can expect to be asked questions centered around what thoughts, emotions, and experiences you are feeling in light of the traumatic event. You will then follow a wand with your eyes as you focus on what comes up for you in the process. There is a specific protocol that the therapist is responsible for, so your job is to just show up and share what is happening for you while your brain does all the healing for you.

What do I need to do to prepare for an EMDR session?

Absolutely nothing! You just come to the session and let the therapist guide you through the process. If you have any other questions that were not answered here, one of our therapists would be happy to answer them for you. You can sign up for a free 30-minute consultation with our therapist matchmaker (California residents only). We provide online therapy and have therapists who are trained in EMDR therapy. We also offer many different types of trauma therapy groups. All of our therapists specialize in trauma-informed care, and informed trauma therapy.
