Woven’s Approach to EMDR
What makes Woven unique as an EMDR therapy provider?
There are many places and providers offering EMDR therapy. The therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in the success of therapy, so we always want you to find the therapist that works best for you. With that in mind, we work hard to create a safe, empathic environment for you whether you come to see us for psychotherapy or EMDR therapy. Because EMDR therapy involves a highly specific protocol with laid out procedures and phases, some clients say that EMDR therapy can feel rigid or mechanical. At Woven, we aim for something different: a flexible, relational, and trauma-informed approach.
Flexible
Even though EMDR calls for a specific protocol, we work to accommodate you and what is happening for you in your life. Sometimes things come up and you need to take a break from processing traumatic memories to focus on what is happening in your daily life. Sometimes you might need to move a little slower through the process because this is your first time in therapy and it takes a little longer for you to feel comfortable. You might prefer to do a weekend EMDR intensive because a weekly therapy session just won’t work for your schedule. We want to ensure you are feeling safe, that we move at the pace that feels right to you, and that we accommodate whatever it is you are going through.
Relational
Our EMDR therapists prioritize connection. We believe that if you do not feel connected to your therapist, therapy will not be helpful to you. Therefore, we spend a few sessions getting to know you and your history so we can build a rapport that can accommodate the difficult material we will be processing together. We care about your thoughts, feelings, and experience of the therapy process, so our therapists will ask you how the process is going for you. We want to know how you experience us and if there is anything we should be doing differently to make you feel safer and more understood.
Trauma-Informed
We are highly trained trauma therapists. We specialize in understanding how trauma affects the brain and the body. Even though EMDR therapy is meant to process traumatic memories, some EMDR therapists do not work exclusively with trauma outside of their EMDR sessions. We do. Our EMDR therapists specialize in betrayal trauma, sexual trauma, foster/adoption trauma, birth trauma, violence/abuse, and grief/loss.
